Lala
Nawa

A new perspective on the Namibian wilderness. Where the bush falls quiet, and the stars take centre stage. Derived from Oshiwambo, the name Lala Nawa means simply “sleep well”, and it carries an invitation with it: to spend one unhurried night in the branches of an ancient camel thorn tree, suspended between the earth and the Namibian sky, with nothing asked of you but to be present.

A night in the camel thorn

SKY DECK

There is a profound, rare poetry in experiencing the wilderness unburdened by distraction. Here, the traditional markers of time dissolve, replaced entirely by the shifting palette of the light, the rhythmic whispers of the bush, and the infinite expanse of the Namibian sky stretching overhead.

It is this spirit of absolute stillness that inspired Lala Nawa, an intimate Sky Deck discreetly cradled within the branches of a magnificent ancient camel thorn tree at Gmundner Lodge. This is a sanctuary where nature dictates the tempo, moments lengthen, and the simplest experiences resonate the deepest.

The tree

The tree itself is a living testament to time. Its vibrant canopy reaches outward across the landscape, while its weathered, sculptural limbs stand in poetic contrast, a quiet meditation on resilience and the enduring grace of the natural world.

Rather than imposing upon this environment, Lala Nawa integrates with it seamlessly, offering a secluded refuge that feels entirely at one with the land.

The journey serves as the prelude to the experience. Guests arrive on foot or by horseback, shedding the familiar as they wind through the bush toward this private enclave. As the afternoon light deepens into gold, the deck invites a moment of pause, a place to absorb the panoramic horizons and watch the earth transform beneath the setting sun.

Lala Nawa at Gmundner Lodge

Lala Nawa is a private Sky Deck set within the branches of an ancient camel thorn tree on the Gmundner Lodge reserve. Guests arrive on foot or by horseback, dine beneath the boughs and spend the night under the open Namibian sky.

The night

As evening claims the landscape, the night unfolds at an unhurried, meditative pace. A private dining experience awaits beneath the boughs, complemented by a thoughtfully curated Namibian gin bar and provisions for sundowners. Lantern light flickers against aged timber, a nearby fire crackles softly, and the first constellations emerge across one of the most pristine night skies on the continent.

Here, true luxury is revealed through understated refinement rather than excess. An open-air bath, a beautifully appointed bed beneath the cosmos, and the delicate nocturnal symphony of the bush converge to create an atmosphere of intimate, untamed wonder. There is no imperative to return to the lodge as darkness falls. Instead, guests are encouraged to linger in the stillness, holding space for the wilderness long after the horizon has faded.

The morning

Morning arrives with a quiet awakening. The first amber rays filter through the camel thorn leaves, the bush stirs to life, and a freshly prepared coffee basket invites a slow, unhurried beginning to the day, with nowhere else to be, and all the time in the world to experience it.

What to expect

Lala Nawa is much more than a night under the stars. It is an invitation to reconnect, with the earth, with one another, and with the rare, forgotten luxury of absolute presence.

At Gmundner Lodge, we believe that the most meaningful luxuries are invariably the quietest: space to breathe, moments to treasure, and the freedom to experience the wild entirely on its own terms.
