Luxury Lodge near Windhoek

A Relais & Châteaux safari lodge on a private 6,000-hectare reserve, a short transfer from Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport.

A Lodge near Windhoek

Most of Namibia’s great safari lodges lie three, four or more hours from the capital. Gmundner Lodge is the rare exception. A member of Relais & Châteaux, it sits on a private 6,000-hectare reserve just south-east of Windhoek — roughly 45 minutes from Hosea Kutako International Airport and about an hour from the city itself. That makes it one of the very few places where a genuine, private wilderness safari begins almost the moment you land.

A Private Reserve on Windhoek's Doorstep

Near the Capital

Set between the Kalahari Desert to the east and the Khomas Highland to the west, the reserve spans 6,000 hectares of private wilderness with just twelve suites — no neighbouring properties, no crowds, only the land and its wildlife. It is close enough to Windhoek to reach with ease, yet far enough to feel genuinely remote the moment you arrive.

By road, the lodge is about 45 minutes (around 52 km) from Hosea Kutako International Airport and roughly an hour (around 67 km) from central Windhoek. For a faster, more spectacular arrival, a private helicopter transfer from the airport is available from €1,610, and the lodge has its own 2,200-metre airstrip and helipad for guests flying in by private aircraft. However you arrive, there is no long cross-country drive at the end of a long-haul flight.

Farm-to-Table Dining & Safari Days

Farm to Table

At Restaurant Friesacher the kitchen is supplied daily from the estate’s own Gmundner Farm — organic vegetables, herbs, eggs, dairy, beef and game — paired with award-winning South African wines and served on Gmundner Keramik tableware, a brand whose heritage reaches back to 1492.

The twelve suites feature indoor and outdoor bathrooms, four-poster beds and private terraces, while the canvas main lodge opens onto Highland views, an infinity pool and a boma fire beneath the stars. Days are filled with game drives and guided experiences across the reserve, with time to unwind in the in-house spa.
